David von der Porten

Biography

An experienced general solicitor, Dave von der Porten works with a broad range of clients, from developers and established businesses to owner-operated businesses and individuals.

Dave takes a pragmatic approach to the practice of law, providing sound legal advice to suit each client’s unique needs. Dave advises business clients (including societies) through the business cycle, including advising on shareholder agreements, joint ventures, partnerships and contracts. He frequently acts in the buying and selling of businesses, including asset and share transactions. To provide his clients with comprehensive advice, Dave works closely with accountants on restructuring, business succession, and tax-driven transactions.

Dave regularly acts for both borrowers and lenders in secured lending transactions, and securing loans against real estate and business assets.

He maintains a comprehensive real estate practice, advising clients on both residential and commercial matters. Developers frequently retain Dave’s services for assistance in residential, mixed-use, and commercial projects. They benefit from his experience in development matters including subdivisions, strata plans filings, and municipal matters.

Dave advises on commercial leases for a broad range of clients and property types, from institutional landlords with multi-tenant properties to owner-operated retail tenants. He also acts for purchasers and sellers of residential real estate and for owners and builders on residential construction matters.

Dave’s practice also includes estate planning and wealth preservation. He supports his clients with clear guidance and assists them with drafting wills and power of attorney documents.
