As a family lawyer, Katherine Lawrence provides clients with practical legal advice for navigating periods of transition. Kate listens closely, providing her clients with clear strategies for achieving the best possible resolution.

Kate’s practice is focused on advising families with complex asset division. To help clients understand the value of their assets—such as a family trust, business, corporation, or piece of real property—Kate works closely with business valuators, accountants, and pension and tax specialists. This collaboration provides clients with an understanding of the tax implications of dividing property and other assets.

Kate also has extensive experience helping clients in situations that involve addiction and domestic violence. She regularly obtains protection and property restraining orders for both men and women; this helps to stabilize the case so that the parties involved can focus on resolving their matter.

Kate helps her clients to understand their rights, responsibilities, and obligations under the law, but she is also keenly aware of the heavy costs of litigation. She ensures that her clients not only understand the expenses that they may incur during the course of their litigation, but that they also take the cost into consideration when making decisions.

Kate works hard to obtain fair settlements for her clients early on in the dispute resolution process by way of consent orders, mediation, and negotiation. When the parties are unable to reach an agreement, Kate is prepared to advocate for her clients in court. She is an experienced trial lawyer and has appeared at all levels of court including the Court of Appeal.

Originally from North Vancouver, Kate clerked for two Los Angeles based non-profit legal organizations and the Los Angeles City Attorney, Family Violence Unit. Upon returning to Vancouver, she articled at a boutique downtown family law firm before joining North Shore Law in 2017.

Kate regularly volunteers through Access Pro Bono and the North Shore Women’s Centre. She is also currently serving as a member of the Legislation and Law Reform Committee of the Canadian Bar Association (BC Branch).

When she is not in the office, Kate has appeared singing and dancing at Carousel Theatre’s annual fundraiser The Lawyer Show. Kate also enjoys spending time with her family and friends, travelling, volunteering in the community, playing the flute, tennis, riding her bike, and reading.

"Kate walked me through every step of my case, explained every legal aspect, and was tough as nails during court."
